Summary
EDF Energy, the UK arm of the EDF Group, puts the development of renewable energy at the heart of its business priorities. It also wishes to play a role in educating and raising awareness on the environment amongst its customers.
- Financing of renewable energy projects
- Supporting charitable and not for profit organisations who use renewable energy
- Reducing CO2 emissions
Implementation
EDF Energy offers a tariff linked to a ‘Green Fund’ which helps to finance sustainable energy projects. The fund is built up from a premium applied to the tariff and from a contribution from EDF Energy.
Finances are raised from contributions from ‘Green Tariff’ customers; they pay a premium of 0.42pence per kWh, which equates to around £14 per annum for a typical customer.
EDF Energy matches these contributions ‘pound for pound’ and allocates the fund to charitable and not for profit organisations, based on the size of the fund and the number of requests.
The projects must demonstrate the added value of this financing beyond the framework of existing traditional funding sources.
Funding decisions are made by a committee including EDF Energy managers and an independent renewable energy consultant. The operational management of the fund is overseen by a full time fund manager.
